This veil workshop will centre on learning to:
– Keep posture strong whilst dancing with the veil;
– Keep the veil buoyant whilst dancing;
– Make gentle and strong veil movements sensuous and dramatic;
– Get the veil to dance to the length of the music notation;
– Make an entrance with a veil.

Baladi – The Roots of Egyptian Dance
A two hour dance session with live music from darabuka player Guy Schalom and accordionist Magdy Tewfik.
Baladi specialist, Guy Schalom leads this interactive dance session focusing on the soulful improvised dance music of urban Cairo. Guy will guide dancers through the various sections of an Ashra Baladi improvisation, including Awadi and Tet, allowing plenty of time for dancers to practice and internalise this soulful and dynamic style of Egyptian dance music. The session will conclude with an opportunity for dancers to improvise with the musicians should they wish to.
Guy Schalom, described as “one of the most interesting and versatile percussionists working in the UK today” (fROOTS) has been an ambassador of Egyptian Baladi music for well over a decade. He has released eight albums with his band the Baladi Blues Ensemble and presented the popular BBC documentary “Bellydancing and the Blues”.
Born in Cairo, Magdy Tewfik has been specialising in Egyptian accordion for over 40 years. He has worked with top dancers Sahar Hamdi and Zizi Mostafa as well as singers Maher el Attar and Mohamed Abdel Motleb. Since relocating to Germany, he has worked with Sayed Balaha, Mahmoud Fadl and Nubian band Salamat.
Marking the launch of Schalom’s latest CD (Baladi Blues Reloaded Vol 2), this event will be a rare opportunity to experience classic Egyptian Baladi as it was in it’s original context – at close quarters!
