Elysian Belly Dance Winter Workshop

Saturday 17th February 2018. 10.30am – 12.00pm, Dance Studio, Paradise Centre Ely. 

A second chance to take part in this workshop, originally held 17 December 2017. This workshop is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the soulful melodies and rhythms of Egyptian Baladi. In this workshop we’ll focus on the baladi taqasim, the solo dance of Egyptian women, looking at the structure of the Awadi Ashra Baladi and how to dance it with baladi styling, nuance, and expression. There will be plenty of time to explore and practice, Elizabeth will guide you as we break down the sections and study this style from an inner perspective.

Suitable for beginners and improvers.

Please wear comfortable dance clothing and bring a hip scarf. We will be dancing barefoot.

“Belly dance for Beginners”, Ely College, Downham Road, Ely, CB6 2SH. Saturday 18th March 2017, 10.00am – 1.00pm.

 This course will provide an introduction to the basics of Egyptian style bellydance. We will look at the basic building blocks of the dance to create a series of short combinations which we will put together to build a choreography. This session will also cover bellydance history to put the dance into context and we will look at various aspects involved in creating a performance.

“Belly dance : An introduction”, St Ivo School, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 6RR,  Saturday 19th November 2016, 10.00am – 1.00pm.

During this fun and friendly introduction to the basics of Egyptian style belly dance we will learn the basic building blocks of the dance and put them together to create a choreography. A look at belly dance history will put the dance into context. Don’t worry – you don’t need to show your belly! Places must be booked in advance, £15.00

“A World of Belly Dance” Day School, Ely College, Saturday 15 October 2016, 10.00am – 4.00pm. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The world of belly dance consists of a huge range of styles of music and dance, each with its own cultural roots. This one-day workshop will look at some of the more popular styles of Egyptian belly dance, including folk and modern styles, you’ll learn about their cultural background, costuming, musical characteristics and instruments. You will also be introduced to Arabic drum rhythms and will have the chance to try various dance props. Through-out the day you will learn several short dance combinations which we will put together to create a full Egyptian dance routine.

Bollywood is the dance style of the Indian film industry. It is colourful and energetic. Come and learn a hippie-inspired Bollywood choreography to a 1970s song, “Dum maro dum”.

Modern bellydance draws on dance moves from many styles of dance, including jazz. In this workshop, we’ll focus on the seductive side of jazz, with moves and combinations which we’ll incorporate  into a jazz fusion choreography.  You’ll play the role of Lola, the Devil’s Assistant, in her “dance of seduction”. There will be the opportunity to perform this choreography in the evening show. You may wish to bring a notebook. Devil’s horns optional. Not suitable for complete beginners.

The Corn Exchange, St Ives, PE27 5AG. 

Bollywood Workshop – Exotic and vivacious, Bollywood dance originates from the Indian film industry and is a mix of classical Indian, jazz, bhangra and bellydance as well as many other dance styles. In this workshop, Elizabeth will teach a fun and expressive dance routine. 1.5 hour workshop £10

This workshop is part of Shimmyfest 2014. Other workshops include Beginners Can Can, Tribal Head Dress and Darbuka Drumming. 

Workshops from 5pm, Evening Hafla 7.30pm to 10.30pm. An evening celebrating dance from all over the world in aid of Cancer Research and Sane.
